What is a data cable?

A data cable is any type of cable, lead or wire that allows you to transfer data from one device to another. This data often comes in the form of file transfer such as documents, videos, photos, programs and music between devices.

A data cable would be used, for example, for syncing / synchronising between your computer and digital camera or smartphone for downloading / uploading media files or simply sending files to a printer to print. They are also used to transfer digital computer data such as software or firmware updates between peripheral hardware devices.

What’s the difference between a data cable and a charging cable?

Many USB leads can be used to charge the batteries of devices such as tablets, mobile phones and handheld games consoles, but they’re not always also data cables.

A charging cable is a lead that can only be used to recharge the battery of your device. It often connects to a mains adapter to draw power from the wall, or can connect to other battery-powered devices to draw power from them. Their sole purpose is to recharge your electrical devices.

A data cable, for the most part, also enables the charging of electronic devices. But, in addition to this, they enable the connection of one device to another for data transfer. This means they can transmit, send and receive digital data - for example, data cables can be used for syncing smartphones to laptops, tablets etc. and act as file transfer cables for files such as photos and other media.

The charging speed and data transfer rates of different data cables differ greatly - usually based on the quality of the cables themselves and the materials used in the wires.

subtel®’s selection of high-quality USB connector charging leads work both as Fast Charging and high-speed data transfer cables - so you always get the best of both worlds.

What is Data Transfer Rate?

A data cable’s data transfer rate (DTR) is the speed with which data transfers can be made between devices through the cable itself.

This speed is measured in Bits Per Second (bps) - a bit being a unit of digital information. Of course, as technology has progressed, the speeds which data cables can achieve have grown dramatically, passing from bits per second (bps), to kilobits per second (kbps), megabits per second (mbps), gigabits per second (gbps), terabits per second (tbps) and beyond.

This data transfer rate is also often referred to as its bandwidth.

The higher the data transfer rate between two devices, the quicker a transfer will be completed. For example, transferring an album from a PC to an MP3 player using a data cable with a transfer speed in the kbps will take a lot longer than one capable of gbps transfer speeds.

What is a Fast Charging Cable?

You might have heard about Fast Charging cables - ones that can charge your smartphone 2-4 times faster than before. Well, what are they and how do they work?

If you’re interested in purchasing a fast charger for your smartphone, laptop, tablet or other device, it’s best to first check that your device is Fast Charger capable. Most modern devices are, and if your device charges with a USB-C cable or Apple Lightning cable, yours probably is.

Cables for Fast Charging work because the wires inside them are larger, thus can carry larger currents. Standard cables are 28 gauge and are capable of a charge rate of around 0.5A, whereas cables with a larger gauge (thicker wires inside) can carry larger currents of 2A+. Thus, your device is charged quicker.

Because of the extra materials needed to make Fast Charge cables, they’re also often more expensive than their slower counterparts - but the increased performance negates the extra cost.

subtel® sells a wide variety of Fast Charger cables for mobile phones, laptops, tablets and a wide variety of other devices - high quality for reliable, long-term performance.

What are the different types of USB cables?

There are many different types of USB cables - some look alike, others don't and it's not always easy to figure out which is which.

If you’re looking for a replacement USB cable, it’s best to first check your device to make sure the new USB cable you’re ordering is the correct one for your device otherwise, it probably won’t work.

It’s become a regular occurrence to see new types of USB connectors emerging on the market - all with different purposes and transfer speeds. Here is a list of some of the most common and their function:

USB Type A - the large, classic USB shape. Most transmission cables have this type of connection on at least one end. Computers usually have several of these input ports. USB A enables both the charging of devices and transferring of information.

USB Type B - a square-shaped connector usually used to connect larger devices such as printers and scanners to a computer. This type is becoming less and less common.

Mini USB - a smaller variant of the type-B, the Mini USB is used for data transfer with many digital cameras and external hard drives.

Micro USB - the standard small, thin USB connector that acts as a charger cable for most on-the-go electronic devices such as portable speakers, MP3 players and older or non-flagship mobile phones and smartphones.

USB Type C - slim with rounded corners, this is the most current USB type. It’s used by modern laptops, smartphones and tablets and offers Fast Charging and higher transfer speeds.

What is an OTG cable?

Firstly, OTG stands for "On The Go" - referring to the fact that OTG adapters and cables allow you to do things that would usually require you to return to your PC or laptop.

USB OTG cables allow you to connect mobile devices such as smartphones, mobile phones, tablets or digital cameras with each other, or directly to input devices such as USB sticks and flash drives, external hard disk drives or even peripherals like a keyboard and mouse.

Here are some possible use-cases for OTG adapters:

1) Storage devices: connect USB sticks and hard drives to mobile phones, smartphones, cameras and tablets to transfer files and pictures

2) Interconnectivity: connect a smartphone or tablet directly to a camera to use the smartphone or tablet as a display screen for the camera

3) Printing via OTG: connect a phone, camera or tablet directly to a printer

4) Mobile gaming: connect games controllers like Xbox or Playstation to a tablet or smartphone to use with gaming apps

5) Peripherals: connect a mouse and keyboard to a mobile phone or tablet for easier, faster typing. Also, if the touch screen of a device was broken, you could still input passwords to gain access and retrieve any data

In order to connect a device using OTG, both devices you want to connect must be OTG-enabled. Most modern devices are, but you should always check the user manual of your device first or look for the green ‘ON-THE-GO’ logo on the packaging (found under the ‘Certified USB’ symbol).
