What is a power bank or portable charger?

Essentially, a power bank is a lithium battery with an output port which allows it to be connected via a charging cable to a wide range of electrical devices. It functions as an external battery, allowing the internal battery of the device to be recharged without needing access to an AC mains adapter.

Powerbanks are designed for portability - often encased in a hard, durable shell - they can be safely carried in a bag or pocket and thus are perfect for journeys, travelling or any time you require power when you don’t have access to a power outlet.

The capacity of power bank chargers can range from 1500 mAh to 20000 mAh. The more milliamps per hour (mAh) the mobile charger has, the larger the capacity of the battery and the more charge it can give to other devices.

If we consider that an average smartphone has an internal battery of 3000mAh-5000mAh, if you have a power bank with 10000mAh you will be able to recharge your phone up to 3 times before you have to recharge your power bank.

In the subtel® online store you will find a wide range of affordable and high quality, fast charging mobile power packs for recharging your phones, smartwatches, wireless speakers, tablets and many more - safely and efficiently.

What should I look for when buying a power bank?

Today, there are almost as many types of portable chargers and powerbanks as there are devices to charge. So, how do you choose the right power bank for your smartphone, tablet, portable speakers etc.?

Here are some things you should look for when making your purchase:

Compatibility: power banks overwhelmingly use USB cables to connect to and charge other devices. First, it’s important to ascertain whether it’s possible to charge your device using a USB cable. The connector that plugs into your device might be something specific to your device, but the end which connects to the portable charger will need to be USB.

Capacity: the energy capacity of a battery is measured in mAh or milliampere-hours. A powerbank with a larger mAh can provide more charge to devices and longer than powerbanks with a lower mAh.

When choosing a powerbank, it’s best to choose one that holds enough mAh to fully recharge the devices you will be using it with. If a smartphone battery averages at 3000mAh-5000mAh, a powerbank with a capacity of 2500mAh will not be able to fully recharge the smartphone’s battery, whereas a 10000mAh powerbank could recharge it perhaps three times.

Size: the size of a power bank does often correspond to its capacity - the bigger it is, the bigger the battery. But, as power banks are also supposed to be portable, if you’re looking for a power bank to fit in your pocket as opposed to in a back, you might want to compromise on size and choose the one that fits.

Construction: as these rechargeable batteries are essentially used on the move, the hardness and resistance of the power bank's materials must also be taken into account in order to provide good protection against shocks and falls.

Ports: USB power banks with multiple USB output ports allow for the simultaneous charging of several devices at once. If you’d like the option of charging one or more devices at the same time, make sure the power bank you choose has at least 2 USB output ports.

Quality: a key rule when buying any batteries is: always buy from trusted sellers. Cheaper, lower quality power banks could be of shoddy build-quality and contain cheap materials. The battery cells within them might not actually contain the mAh figure specified, may charge slower and will ultimately have a shorter lifespan than higher-quality ones.
